What happens to your family's information
In short: living people are seen only by their family, nothing is sold or used for advertising, and you can leave and take your things with you at any time.
Who can see what
- Living people (and anyone born in the last 100 years with no recorded death) are seen only by approved members of their family's tree. Visitors never see their pages, photos or places in the tree.
- Each tree's admins decide whether visitors can find living relatives by name in search (name, birth year, town and a small photo, so a cousin can recognise themselves and ask to join). It is on unless they turn it off; profiles of living people stay private either way.
- People who have died, life stories and the library can be public, so that relatives can find their family. Anything marked family-only stays family-only.
- Photos and stories you add are shared with your family unless you choose otherwise, and you can change who sees each one in Settings.
- Each family's tree is separate. Being in one family's tree shows you nothing of another's.
What is stored
- Your email address (to sign you in), and the name and picture you choose.
- The family tree, photos, letters and stories that family members add, and a log of every change so that mistakes can be undone.
- One cookie that keeps you signed in. There is no advertising, no tracking and no analytics.
Who else is involved
- The site runs on Fly.io in California.
- Sign-in links, invitations and the family news are sent by email through Resend.
- Maps are drawn with tiles from OpenStreetMap, which sees which areas of the map you look at.
- When a family turns on the family news, a short summary of each issue may be written by Claude, Anthropic's AI, from what the family shared for that issue.
- Family members can connect their own AI agent with a token they make in Settings. It can do only what they could do themselves, and everything it changes is logged and can be undone.
Your choices
- Correct anything about yourself or your relatives on their page.
- Ask to be removed: any admin of your family's tree can take a person out, or remove a member and everything they added.
- Delete your account in Settings, under "Leave or delete". You leave every tree, what you uploaded is deleted, and your email and name are wiped.
- Delete a whole tree: its admins can do this in Settings. Everything in it is removed.
- Take a copy: any family member can download everything they can see in their tree as one file (Settings, under "Leave or delete"), with a link to every photo and document in it.
Backups
The person who runs the site keeps dated backups so that it can be restored after a mistake, so something deleted from the site can remain in older backups. On the site itself, files nothing uses any more are removed after 30 days.
Questions? Ask the admin of your family's tree; they can reach the person who runs this site.
